You just spent weeks—maybe months—coding and perfecting your Android application. You finally have a working build, but right now, it only lives on your computer.

If you want the world to download your creation and potentially turn your hobby into a reliable side income, you need to get it onto the biggest stage available. Figuring out how to publish an Android app on the Google Play Store can feel overwhelming, especially with Google’s strict developer policies and review processes.

Do not worry. I have broken down the entire submission process into a simple, step-by-step checklist. By the end of this guide, you will know exactly how to prepare your app, create a compelling store listing, pass the policy audits, and confidently hit the publish button.

1. Ensure Technical Readiness and Quality

Before you even think about paying the registration fee for a developer account, your app needs to be ready for production. Google expects high-quality, modern applications.

Target the Latest API Level

Your application must support the latest version of Android. As of this guide, the highest required API level is 37, which corresponds to Android 17.

Open Android Studio and head to your app-level build.gradle file. You need to update both the compileSdk and targetSdk to 37. This ensures your app offers the highest compatibility with modern devices.

Generate an Android App Bundle (.aab)

When you build your final release, do not generate a standard .apk file. While APKs work fine for distributing apps on your own website, Google Play requires an Android App Bundle (.aab). App bundles shrink the initial download size for your users by only delivering the specific code their specific device needs.

Optimize and Shrink Your Code

Remove any test code, hard-coded API keys, or unused strings left over from your debugging phase. Everything should be securely stored in environment variables.

2. Set Up Your Google Play Console Account

Google will ask if you are registering as a business/organization or as an individual. If you are a solo developer building apps as a hobby, select the individual option.

You must pay a $25 USD registration fee. Unlike Apple’s yearly $99 fee, Google’s fee is a one-time payment. Once paid, you can publish as many free or paid applications as you want without extra charges.

3. Create Your Store Listing and Upload Assets

Your store listing is your app’s digital storefront. You want to make it look professional so users actually hit the install button. Go to the “Grow Users” tab in your console, click “Store presence,” and edit your main store listing.

  • App Icon: A 512x512 pixel PNG file that is under 1MB. Pro tip: Android Studio has a default Play Store icon in the src/main folder you can use if you are in a hurry.
  • Feature Graphic: A 1024x500 pixel image (PNG or JPG). This acts as the promotional banner at the top of your store page.

4. Navigate App Policies and Compliance

Add a Privacy Policy

You must provide a public URL detailing your data collection practices. This is mandatory if your app accesses personal data or targets modern Android versions. You can host this policy on your own website. If you do not have a website, create a public Google Doc and paste that link into the “App Content” section of your console.

Complete the Permission Audit

Review your AndroidManifest.xml file for sensitive permissions like Location, SMS, or Read External Storage. If your app does not strictly require these features to function, remove them immediately. Google will reject apps that request unnecessary sensitive permissions.

Content Rating and Account Deletion
